FREE DAILY NEWSPAPER FOR CITY HIGH SCHOOL

SUMMER in the city usually brings gleeful sounds from children playing street games or frolicking in pools, but in Quezon City for the past seven years—in the third district to be precise—the kids have been spending time in public elementary school classrooms where volunteer teachers help them improve their English language skills.

At the moment, however, the kids are not doing noun-and-verb agreement exercises because Jorge “Bolet” Banal Jr., the energetic councilor who started the Summer English Reinforcement Classes (SERC) is busy campaigning for Congress (District III) under the Liberal Party of Sen. Benigno Aquino III. Banal says SERC will resume next summer.

No SERC this season, yes, but that doesn’t mean Banal’s literacy advocacy is on hold.

A firm believer that education is the key to ending poverty, he has signed an agreement with the Inquirer for daily subscriptions for Quirino High School, which is the second school in the Inquirer in Education (IIE) program that can look forward to getting copies of the paper every day this coming school year for its Inquirer Learning Corner (ILC).
